At the core of this craft is the Lokta plant (“Daphne bholua” or “Daphne papyracea”), a shrub that grows abundantly in the high-altitude forests of Nepal between 2,000 and 3,000 meters above sea level. Harvesting Lokta bark is a sustainable process, as the plant naturally regenerates and the root system remains unharmed.

The Process of Making Lokta Paper

1. Harvesting the Bark

The process begins with the careful harvesting of Lokta bark. Only the bark is stripped from the shrubs, leaving the root system intact. This allows the plant to regrow naturally within five to seven years, maintaining the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

2. Boiling and Cleaning

The harvested bark is boiled in water for several hours to soften its fibers. Once boiled, the bark is thoroughly cleaned to remove impurities, ensuring a pure base for the paper.

3. Beating the Fibers

The softened Lokta fibers are then pounded using wooden mallets. This traditional method breaks down the fibers into a pulp while maintaining their natural strength. The pulp is mixed with water and poured onto a flat screen, often made from bamboo or fine mesh. Craftsmen spread the pulp evenly across the screen to create a uniform sheet. The screens are then laid out under the sun to dry naturally, giving the paper its signature texture and strength. It can take anywhere from 2 -5 days to dry depending on the weather.
